The ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test is the principal means of satisfying the health and safety requirements of SKILLcard. The test is designed to give everybody working on site a minimum level of health and safety awareness. Some exceptions are permitted - see below. SKILLcards issued on the basis of passing the ConstructionSkills Health and Safety Test are specially overprinted 'H&S Tested' in silver on the front of the card.
SKILLcard applications must be made within two years of meeting the health and safety requirements.

The test costs £17.50. A book containing guidance on the testing process and all the questions to help you prepare can be purchased seperately for £8.49, and a CD-Rom including voiceover and a mock test for £10.99.
Exemptions
If you have achieved a relevant NVQ/SVQ within the past two years and are applying for a SKILLcard for the first time, this may also satisfy the health and safety requirements of SKILLcard. This is because the NVQ/SVQ contains a health and safety module.
You can also satisfy the health and safety requirements of SKILLcard if you have undertaken appropriate certificated health and safety training, provided such training was undertaken not more than two years before the date of your SKILLcard application, as indicated below:
For Operatives and Trainees/Apprentices:
- Client Contractors National Safety Group (CCNSG) 2-day Safety Passport scheme course.
For Supervisory cards:
- B&ES (the Building & Engineering Services Association, formerly the HVCA) health and safety awareness training courses: Either Working Safely in Building Services plus Managing Safety in Building Services, Or Building Services Safety Management. Note: Managing Safety in Building Services is aimed at those Supervisors who have already completed the Working Safely in Building Services course. The Building Services Safety Management course is designed for experienced Supervisors (and involves some pre-course work and preparation).
- Client Contractors National Safety Group (CCNSG) 2-day Safety Passport scheme course.
- National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Construction Certificate (Note: not the general certificate as this is not construction oriented)
For Management level cards:
- B&ES health and safety awareness training courses: Either Working Safely in Building Services plus Managing Safety in Building Services, Or Building Services Safety Management. Note: Managing Safety in Building Services is aimed at those Supervisors who have already completed the Working Safely in Building Services course. The Building Services Safety Management course is designed for experienced Supervisors (and involves some pre-course work and preparation).
