How to Apply

Applying for your SKILLcard

There are three main stages in making your initial application for an Engineering Services SKILLcard (separate arrangements apply for renewals of existing SKILLcards – click on Renewing your SKILLcard alongside to the left):

1. The minimum requirement for the issue of an Engineering Services SKILLcard is that you must fulfil the health and safety criteria of the scheme.

2. You will need to prove the skills you possess using one of the accredited methods recognised by SKILLcard.

3. You must satisfactorily complete the relevant application form.

You can read more about each of these stages below.

Meeting the Health and Safety Criteria

Full information about this is contained in Health and Safety Testing.

Proving your Industry Status

You can demonstrate your industry status dependent on your occupation:

Skilled Workers

  • Skilled worker with NVQ/SVQ Level 2 (Blue card) or Level 3 (Gold card);
  • Skilled worker with an indentured apprenticeship (Gold card);
  • Skilled worker with an informal apprenticeship and a City and Guilds craft certificate appropriate to your trade (Blue card);
  • Skilled worker with an informal apprenticeship and a City and Guilds advanced craft certificate appropriate to your trade (Gold card);
  • Skilled worker without recognised trade qualifications but able to satisfy the conditions of Industry Accreditation – provided this is done before the closure of Industry Accreditation for your occupation (Blue Card) – see Industry Accreditation and Occupations Available.
  • Skilled worker without recognised trade qualifications but able to satisfy the conditions of the Experienced Worker card – because the opportunity for Industry Accreditation has closed for your occupation (Blue Experienced Worker card) – see Blue (Experienced Worker) Card (under Card Information) and Occupations Available

Supervisors and Managers
You can demonstrate you qualify for the issue of a card:

  • By achieving a relevant NVQ/SVQ Level 3, 4 or 5; or
  • By being able to satisfy the conditions of Industry Accreditation – see under Industry Accreditation.

Mates and Service & Maintenance Assistants
If none of the above applies to you – because you are neither a Trainee, nor a Skilled worker, nor a Supervisor or Manager – you can apply for a Green SKILLcard.

Ancillary/specialist occupations (linked to specific NVQ/SVQ Units)
If your occupation is not directly or wholly underpinned by a relevant NVQ/SVQ, you can demonstrate you qualify for the issue of a card:

  • By submitting evidence that you are in one of the Construction Related Occupations recognised by SKILLcard – see Dark Green SKILLcard, Construction Related Occupations (NVQ/SVQ Unit-based cards) (under Card Information); and
  • By being able to satisfy the conditions of Industry Accreditation – see under Card Information, as above.

Ancillary/specialist occupations (with no full NVQ/SVQ and not linked to specific NVQ/SVQ Units)
You can demonstrate you qualify for the issue of a card:

  • By submitting evidence that you are in one of the ancillary occupations recognised by SKILLcard – see White ("Non-Availability" SKILLcard, Construction Related Occupations) – under Card Information.
Completing the Application Form

It will help us get your SKILLcard to you as soon as possible if you satisfactorily complete the correct application form. Which form to use will depend on:

  • the colour of card you apply for;
  • your occupation; and
  • whether Industry Accreditation remains available for your occupation or whether you have to apply via the Experienced Worker route.
