Health and Safety Testing

The Construction Skills Health, Safety and Environment test is the main way to satisfy the health & safety requirements of SKILLcard. The test is designed to give everybody working on site a minimum level of health & safety awareness, although there are a few exceptions (see below).


You need to make sure you apply for your SKILLcard within two years of passing the H,S&E test.

How do I book my test?

You can book a test online or through the booking hotline on 0344 994 4488 (lines are open Monday-Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm). You’ll need to have to hand:

  1. Your full name, address, date of birth and National Insurance number
  2. Which test you’d like to book, you can find more information overleaf. The test costs £19.50, and you can make payment over the phone by credit or debit card

A book containing guidance on the testing process and all the questions to help you prepare can be purchased, and a revision DVD including a simulated test.

Exemptions

You may satisfy the health & safety requirements of SKILLcard if:

  • You have achieved an NVQ/SVQ within the past two years (the NVQ/SVQ contains a health & safety module)
  • You have undertaken appropriate certified health & safety training within the last two years. This can include any of the courses below.

For operatives and trainees/apprentices:

  • Client Contractors National Safety Group (CCNSG) two day Safety Passport Scheme course

For supervisory cards:

  • A BESA (Building & Engineering Services Association) health & safety awareness training course. Either:
    • Working Safely in Building Services AND Managing Safety in Building Services (aimed at supervisors who have already completed the Working Safely in Building Services course), OR
    • Building Services Safety Management (designed for experienced supervisors, and includes some pre-course work and preparation)
  • CITB Supervisory Site Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course
  • Client Contractors National Safety Group (CCNSG) two day Safety Passport Scheme course
  • National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) Construction Certificate (NOT the General Certificate)
  • Institute of Safety & Health (IOSH) Managing Safely

For managerial level cards: 

  • A BESA (Building & Engineering Services Association) health & safety awareness training course. Either:
    • Working Safely in Building Services AND Managing Safety in Building Services (aimed at supervisors who have already completed the Working Safely in Building Services course), OR
